US Athlete Turns Tragedy Into Gold

Publication by EssentiallySports | October 4, 2026 | Edition #751 |
Hey Athletic Fans,
A shark took her leg, but it never touched her drive. A Paralympic swimmer who lost part of her leg in a brutal attack three years ago is now chasing LA28 gold and along the way, she's raised half a million dollars for a goal that has nothing to do with herself.
Also today, Simone Biles' closest American rival just confirmed she's coming back to the sport, with LA28 squarely in her sights too.
All that and more in today’s edition of Essentially Athletics.

Men, Say Goodbye to Eyebags, Dark Spots & Wrinkles

Do you think Simone Biles would make the LA28 team if she decides to return? |

Nairo Quintana earned an iconic tribute as he closed the book on a 15-year career at the Giro dell'Emilia, the very race where he claimed his breakthrough Movistar win fourteen years earlier — a fitting final chapter for two Grand Tour titles and 53 career victories. Watch below 👇

On this day in 1953, Jim Peters, a London optician who trains in plimsolls on his way to work, breaks his own marathon world record for the third time in 16 months, running 2:18:34.8 in Turku, Finland.
It's part of a stretch in which he lowers the mark four times over three years, eventually becoming the first man ever to break 2:20 for the distance.
He famously calls the marathon "the Everest of athletics". That’s a title that proves tragically fitting a year later, when he collapses repeatedly just short of the finish line at the Commonwealth Games, his body giving out in the heat before he can cross the tape.
