On this day in 1926, English long-distance runner Violet Piercy records 3:40:22 on a solo run from Windsor to Battersea, becoming the first woman World Athletics recorded as completing a marathon.

Her run was remarkable at a time when the Women's Amateur Athletic Association prohibited women from competing in races longer than 1,000 meters.

Historical debate later surrounded Piercy’s achievement, as researchers found that her route covered just over 20 miles rather than the official 26.2-mile marathon distance.
