Hey Athletic Fans,

A track star is on the long road to recovery after a car accident left them with multiple fractures. They're now sharing the first real update since going under the knife, and it's not sugarcoating how tough the road ahead looks.

Also in today’s edition, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone pens a heartfelt tribute to an Olympic icon following their retirement race, a fitting send-off from one legend to another.

All that and more in tonight's edition of Essentially Athletics.

Alessandro Fancellu won the stage but the day's real talking point at Giro d'Abruzzo came during a crash after a spectator kicked a bottle straight into the peloton, sending multiple riders crashing to the road. Watch below 👇

On this day in 1967, Anni Pede, a mother of two competing without her federation's official blessing, runs a women's marathon world best of 3:07:26 in Waldniel, West Germany. Her time is good enough to finish third overall, ahead of most of the men in the race.

The run is no accident. Coach Ernst van Aaken recruited her specifically to silence critics who doubted a 13-year-old girl could have legitimately run a similar world best months earlier.

Because German officials still didn't formally permit women to race, Pede and training partner Monika Boers are made to start 30 metres behind the men. That head start does nothing to stop them from making history anyway.
