Publication by EssentiallySports | October 15, 2026 | Edition #772 |

Elsewhere, a new report claims FIFA’s president made Donald Trump a promise about a red card, and the details behind it raise some serious questions.
All that and more in today’s edition of Essentially Athletics.

Shalane Flanagan is a retired Olympic medalist and one of the most decorated American distance runners of her era. She won silver in the 10,000m at the 2008 Beijing Games, an upgrade from bronze, and in 2017 became the first American woman to win the New York City Marathon since 1977.
After announcing her retirement in October 2019, she moved into coaching and joined the University of Oregon staff in 2022. She now coaches the Ducks’ women’s cross country team and was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2025 for the second straight season.
Flanagan also co-wrote the cookbook Run Fast. Eat Slow., a New York Times bestseller, and in 2021 she came out of retirement to run six marathons in six weeks, finishing every one in under three hours.
