Before Sabastian Sawe’s historic sub-two-hour run in London, the marathon world record belonged to the late Kelvin Kiptum.

The Kenyan phenom set the mark of 2:00:35 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, slicing 34 seconds off the previous record. ​Kiptum had originally surpassed the legendary Eliud Kipchoge, who held the record of 2:01:09 from the 2022 Berlin Marathon.

While Kipchoge was the first to run sub-two in a controlled exhibition, Kiptum’s Chicago time remained the official competitive standard until today, when Sawe changed that.
