Well, that moment came when Bob Beamon set his iconic world record at the 1968 Summer Olympics with a leap of 8.90 meters. The jump was so extraordinary that the optical measuring system wasn’t long enough to record it, and officials had to bring out an old-school steel tape measure to confirm the distance. Remarkably, Beamon’s record stood unbroken for 23 years.
