On this day, 126 years ago, Charlotte Cooper became the first female Olympic champion in any individual sport, winning the tennis gold medal at the 1900 Paris Summer Olympics. She defeated France's Hélène Prévost in the women’s singles final and partnered with Reginald Doherty to win the mixed doubles later.

Charlotte Cooper went on to lose her hearing at the age of 26. Although it did not stop her from achieving greatness; she went on to win a total of five Wimbledon singles titles and two gold medals at the 1900 Paris Olympics.
