On this day in 2008, Samuel Wanjiru breaks free down the finishing straight in Beijing's Bird's Nest to become the first Kenyan ever to win Olympic marathon gold, stopping the clock at 2:06:32 to smash Carlos Lopes' 24-year-old Olympic record.

Morocco's Jaouad Gharib crosses 44 seconds later in 2:07:16, also inside the old mark, with Ethiopia's Tsegay Kebede taking bronze. At just 21, Wanjiru becomes the youngest Olympic marathon champion since 1932.
