Hey Athletic Fans,

An Olympic gold medalist is walking away from the sport at the top of her game, and it's got nothing to do with burnout or injury. At 28, she's trading in her skates for a stethoscope, putting hockey on hold indefinitely to chase a dream that predates her entire athletic career.

Also today, Noah Lyles had a genuine fanboy moment meeting one of America's sprinting legends, and the internet can't get enough.

All that and more in today’s edition of Essentially Athletics.

Reese Esponda continued her breakout 2026, posting a 13.800 on floor — the event where the 17-year-old Simone Biles protégé has already beaten an Olympic champion this year, on her way to winning the US floor exercise national title back in August. Watch below 👇

On this day in 1988, Gelindo Bordin stages a dramatic late surge to win marathon gold in Seoul in 2:10:32, becoming Italy’s first Olympic champion in the men’s marathon.

Bordin was still third with about 2 km remaining, behind world champion Douglas Wakiihuri and Ahmed Salah, but surged past both in the closing stages to win by 15 seconds.

The victory also gave Italy its first Olympic medal in the event since 1924, while Wakiihuri took silver and Salah claimed Djibouti’s first Olympic marathon medal.
