On July 24, 1908, American Johnny Hayes won Olympic marathon gold after Italy's Dorando Pietri was disqualified for receiving help from officials near the finish line. Pietri had collapsed several times in the stadium's final stretch, but his dramatic effort still won him a special cup from Queen Alexandra despite the DQ.
