On August 5, 1984, world-record holder Joan Benoit won the first Olympic women’s marathon in 2:24:52, setting the inaugural Olympic record and finishing 1:26 ahead of Norway’s Grete Waitz.

Benoit entered as the fastest woman ever over 26.2 miles after her 2:22:43 in Boston the previous year, and she led from the start to claim the historic gold.
