Hey Athletic Fans,

One race from 2020 just keeps getting messier. A third athlete from that legendary half marathon has now been hit with a doping ban, tying the result to an already-infamous field that's slowly being picked apart years later.

Also today, there's finally some good news on the injury front as the world record chaser who tore her Achilles mid-race has come through surgery successfully.

All that and more in today’s edition of Essentially Athletics.

Mariam Kareem delivered the performance of her young career, slashing nearly a second off her own personal best to win the UAE's first-ever gold medal at the Asian Games in a Games-record, remarkable for an 18-year-old who was running two seconds slower just two months earlier. Watch below 👇

On this day in 1988, Florence Griffith Joyner produces the most dominant single day in sprinting history. She broke the 200m world record in the semifinal with 21.56, then shattered it again just 100 minutes later in the final with a staggering 21.34, completing her sprint double at the Seoul Olympics.

The mark smashed a record that had stood for nine years, and remarkably, it's still standing today — the longest-lasting record in the event, alongside her own 100m mark from earlier that year.

She adds two more medals before the Games are over, gold in the 4x100m relay and silver in the 4x400m, capping one of the greatest single-Olympics performances by any athlete, male or female.
