Hey Athletic Fans,

Race rehearsals don't usually come with wildlife encounters. A triathlon coach got a very unwelcome training partner during an Ironman practice swim, when something with teeth clamped onto his arm mid-stroke in the middle of the river.

The kicker? He had to fight tooth and nail on the spot, surviving to tell the tale.

All that and more in today's edition of Essentially Athletics.

It's Here: Pique's New Caffeine-Free Afternoon Energy

I quit my afternoon coffee. Not because I wanted to — because I found something better.

You know that wall you hit every day around 2–3 PM? I used to just accept it as the cost of doing anything. Another coffee, a quick spike, then the crash — and somehow I'd still feel dehydrated by dinner.

Then I tried X·E Fountain, Pique's brand-new electrolyte energy drink, and I genuinely wasn't ready for how good "no crash" could feel.

No caffeine jitters. No 4 PM slump. Just clean, steady energy that actually hydrates me instead of draining me. It's built with a premium Vitamin B Complex for natural cellular energy, Magnesium Malate + Taurate for real focus, and a full electrolyte blend that makes it feel like a treat, not a chore.

The cucumber-celery-lime flavor is so crisp and refreshing — it's basically stolen my afternoon coffee slot completely.

Do you think Emmanouil Karalis will ever beat Mondo Duplantis again?

Audrey Werro produced the third-fastest 800m in history, clocking a national record in Zurich to move to the top of the world rankings and edge ever closer to Jarmila Kratochvílová's 43-year-old world record. Watch below 👇

On this day in 1972, David Edgar, John Murphy, Jerry Heidenreich, and Mark Spitz combine for a world record 3:26.42 in the 4x100m freestyle relay. They beat the Soviet Union by well over three seconds at the Olympic Games.

It's the third of Spitz's seven golds and seven world records at these Games, a run that would go unmatched until Michael Phelps tied it 36 years later in Beijing. Heidenreich's blistering 50.78 split is the fastest of the field before Spitz seals it on anchor.
