The men's 100m Diamond League standings make for unusual reading this season: Noah Lyles, the reigning Olympic champion in the event, sits ninth with 15 points. For context, that’s outside the automatic qualifying places heading into the season's final regular meeting in Zurich.

It's a genuine paradox.

Lyles won his third US national 100m title in July with a world-leading 9.79, defining his status as the man to beat on paper. But he's raced the 100m sparingly on the Diamond League circuit compared to his rivals, and a string of tight finishes has left him short on points.

He’ll need at least three more points to overcome both Emmanuel Eseme and Kenneth Bednarek, who own the last two spots with 18 points. And since the Diamond League system awards the winner 8 points and the eighth-place finisher 1 point, Lyles will need to finish fifth or higher to qualify for Brussels.

Even that depends on results elsewhere, which makes the Zurich DL all the more interesting.
