Hey Athletic Fans,

Days before the World Championships, a national team has pulled one of its biggest stars from the squad. The Olympic medallist was expected to chase three medals, but an internal investigation into misconduct allegations has ended his week before it began.

Elsewhere, Jordan Chiles is making it clear exactly why she’s back in the chase for a spot at LA28.

All that and more in today’s edition of Essentially Athletics.

On this day in 1925, Jed Graef, a 6-foot-6 Princeton captain, wins the 200m backstroke at the Tokyo Olympics with a world record 2:10.3.

He edged out Gary Dilley by two-tenths of a second, and Bob Bennett took bronze, completing an American sweep. Both Graef and Dilley beat Tom Stock's previous mark of 2:10.9, who fell ill during the US trials and missed the team altogether.

It’s the first time the event has been contested at the Olympics since 1900, and Graef’s record stands for three years.
