On this day in 1988, Anthony Nesty pulled off one of the greatest upsets in Olympic swimming history. He outdid heavy favourite Matt Biondi by one hundredth of a second to win the 100m butterfly in Seoul. 

Biondi had led the entire race and looked set for a sixth gold of the Games. But a costly late stroke into the wall instead of a glide proves fatal, as Nesty surges past in the final metre.

It's the first Olympic medal, gold or otherwise, ever won by an athlete from Suriname, and Nesty becomes the first Black swimmer in history to win an individual Olympic gold.
