On July 19, 1903, French cyclist Maurice Garin won the first-ever Tour de France, completing the gruelling six-stage race that covered roughly 2,500 kilometres over 19 days. Garin, nicknamed "The Little Chimney Sweep" for his former profession, finished nearly three hours ahead of the runner-up. His victory launched what would become the world's most prestigious cycling race, now run annually for over a century.
